I'm excited for Days, I actually think it could overtake B&B in the ratings.
ReplyDeleteIs Days really that damn good? I almost barf at the lovefest that the people over at the SON board is giving to this show.
ReplyDelete"Is Days really that damn good? I almost barf at the lovefest that the people over at the SON board is giving to this show."
ReplyDeleteNo, it isn't... not by a long shot. No one considers that this week's gains might have something to do with last year's Film Noir rerun. But, there is always a spin waiting to be spun, and even more who are willing to spin it, especially when it works in their favor. Prime example: DOOL is closer to being #4 than it is at being #2. Just look at the difference in the numbers between the three.
Good for those who think all is well, but I'm not buying it.
Bad for the show, because then Tomlin can continue his PASSonit transformation. I imagine some folks returned to see what Gnarly was up to.
ReplyDeleteI seriously doubt the CC fans who floved her on GL will like the rest of PASS II, or those who remember DAYS of the early 90s.
I'm not buying it either. The baby switch story while well acted is starting to fall flat. The reveal while dramatic lacked punch and excitement. The only excitement was provided by James Scott's acting. Everything else on the show is so ordinary and dullish. Maybe Carly and Vivian returning will provide a boost -- Days has been surprising me with its numbers. But I believe all of the "praise" for Days is coming with the everyone loves a winner thing. One little misstep, like if the Carly or Vivian storyline somehow don't live up to expectations, and you can bet those praising it right now will be the first in line to trash the show. The same thing happened with Y&R -- earlier this year, that show could do no wrong. Now everyone is calling for the head of TPTB LOL!
ReplyDelete"Is Days really that damn good?"
ReplyDeletefor those whose measuring stick is JER and liked his kind of plot driven stories with characters who were interchangable, yeah, this is considered great stuff. Is it really, when compared to soaps in the past and the writers who crafted characters with vibrant and amusing personalties? Of course not but most of these people didn't watch days in the 70's and early 80'sand the ones who say the didwere mostly very young or couldn't tell the difference between plot driven and character driven stories. I can't count the number of times I've had to read comments about how wonderfully character driven JER's stories were in the 90's. When I read stuff like that I know the poster didn't learn the difference. I really laugh reading how great the baby switch is now just because it's long and drawn out and full of soapy twists. It's embarassing to read posts like that out of adults who supposedly took high school lit claases and ought to know the difference between the crap I see on nearly every soap now. The writers are lazy and show little imagination either because that is what the producers and networks want or because they have no self-respect to make it better. Only OLTL is trying and are for their efforts end up at the bottom of the ratings. The networks wanted fans with lower expectations and the got them but in the process chased away the majority they used to have watching.
Go Days! I'm happy for the show and happen to think it has been very entertaining. I know the haters will go on hating, but I say, good job and keep up the good work. Come on, Auntie Vivian!!!
ReplyDeleteso viewers who expect quality are haters. interesting. Since when does having a different opinion make someone a hater?
ReplyDeleteGood ratings don't necessarily mean a show is good. If that were the case, the ratings performances of B&B and OLTL would be reversed. The brilliantly written Santa Barbara was a perennial ratings loser.
ReplyDeleteI loved Days in the '80s and am returning now for CC and Louise Sorel. I was a huge fan of CC's work on GL. GL and Days couldn't be more different and I'm having a hard time making the transition from the character-driven GL to Tomlin's Days. I've enjoyed getting reacquainted with familiar faces (Bo/Hope, Maggie, Victor, etc.), but the show as a whole isn't remotely as entertaining as it was back in the day. Of course, Days is hardly alone in that regard.
I'm not sure what to make of Carly's return. I do know that if they show the stabbing scene one more time my head will explode.
On a totally unrelated topic, there has been talk of Comcast acquiring NBC Universal. Unfortunately, if it happens it probably won't mean the end of Zucker according to a Bloomberg.com article titled "Comcast Said to Favor Keeping NBC's Zucker, Management Team."
From what I am hearing LENO in primetime is bombing. WONDERFUL!! I am not happy due to Leno's failure -- though I did not watch Leno -- I am cheering because of NBC's ageism (for they fired Leno in the first place) and their greed (since it costs far less to spend 35mil for five nights of Leno than about 35mil per primetime 10PM scripted drama, which would cost about 175 mil, 140 less than what they are currently paying. I want the networks to burn for their love of cheap of quality.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Days getting the ratings they're getting because of the Bell soaps (Y&R and B&B) connection since many fans on these soap boards I know are not only Days fans but are Y&R fans as well?
ReplyDeleteIf that's true, I can see why DOOL is getting these ratings. B&B and Y&R are awful lately. Longtime Y&R fans especially are complaining about how plot driven the show has become. I've never been a fan and the only thing I ever liked about the show was Terry Lester as Jack but I tried watching again this summer due to all the hype and I don't understand the appeal.
ReplyDeleteI also find it odd that both Dena and MAB were able to get both of their former bosses fired the same time under the way? inquiring minds wants to know! Why hasn't the soap press put 2 to 2 together about this?
ReplyDeleteAnyways, one example I can think of why Y&R fans would flock to DAYS is because of the JER first run when DAYS was number 2 in the ratings.
People watched DULL JERk's first run because it was so awful they made fun of it, and there were the JERk people who loved his crap writing and hot boys, and J/M fans -- I could never understand them, because it made Drake and Dee a joke in the soap world, and I never heard fans of the other super couples loving it, or wanting that story for their favs.
ReplyDeleteDAYS lost millions of long time viewers due to Santa in Salem, and those that came to watch for the most part did not remain fans. Just like the Serial Killer story, people stopped due to the firing of much of the cast, some watched because the weeks leading up to the murders was the most airtime their favs had had in years, others watched to see how silly the show was, with the cartoonish murders.
Other than the Dee fans who loved Marlena was the center of it, many HATED IT with a passion. It always annoyed me that Dee fans were so okay with the mass firings, and then I had to laugh because JERk threw Dee under a bus too -- but again I thought he did so with her possessed.
