Rehash of Our Lives

So this week we’re obviously in for a lot of teeth gnashing and grief as BOPE search for their kidnapped daughter, Ciara. I’m trying to care. I really am. But this is just rehash one time too many for me.

Back at the beginning of the decade, Kristian Alfonso gave a wonderful performance when J.T. was assumed dead only later to be taken away by his biological parents back in 2001 or 2002, whenever the hell it was. She should have won an Emmy. She kicked ass with the Zack death storyline. Who can forget Hope’s primal scream in the hospital when she learned her little boy was dying? She didn’t win an Emmy that time either. And now, as a viewer, I’m supposed to mentally gear up for more Hope dramatics with Ciara’s kidnapping. And I just can’t.

The surprise is that Peter Reckell seems to be more on his game this time around. Perhaps his own relatively new parenthood has given him more to relate to with this kind of story. When Bo was describing what Ciara was wearing before she was missing, his agony was palpable. Even the stupid plot of his ESP or whatever became a little more watchable when he was horrified to see that his nightmarish vision come true when he found his daughter’s abandoned teddy bear in the park. So much for Douchebag Nelson’s October 2007 article that Reckell was one of the 20 worst soap actors. I’m sure Peter is crying about that insult all the way to the red carpet when he goes to the Emmys this year.

Kudos that BOPE finally have something to do besides hang around at the cop shop…but for the love of God, why doesn’t PASSIONS LITE give them something else besides this same old “lost child” storyline? I keep hearing these various podcasts go on about how much the DAYS writing has improved since they let go of the vets. Oh, really? BOPE is losing a child for the umpteenth time. Kate is being a mom a little too freakishly concerned about her son’s lovelife for the umpteenth time. Stephanie/Phillip/Melanie and Nicole/EJ/Sami seem to be in these triangles that will go on for the rest of all time. Wow, I’m so impressed with all this rehash writing. Woo-hoo!

PR and KA took very public paycuts during this whole economic crisis without bitching about it in blogs and twitters. Seems the least PASSIONS LITE could do is give them something beyond a rerun of an old storyline. Granted, BOPE have done practically everything that a supercouple can do. Back from the dead. Check. Multiple personalities. Check. Adventures and mysteries around the world. Check. Divorced and remarried. Check. Infidelities, miscarriage, difficult stepchildren, who’s the daddy…you name it, they’ve done it. But if we’re going to repeat history, let’s bring BOPE back to their glory days when they were off on their crazy adventures around the world, even if they have to make out in the L.A. grass and pretend it’s New Orleans. That’s when they were the couple I loved.

  1. Finally a storyline for Bope but like you said rehash writing, maybe it will be better this fall with Vivian, Carly and Lawrence come back.
When sometimes i listen the postcast they never say that the writing has improved since the vets leaving. Where have you heard that ?
The baby switch storyline doesn't want to end so tell me the baby-switch storyline with Bope and Lexie was also very long like that ? Because frankly this story has began one year and half ago no ?? Even for a soap it's too slow.

  2. On both WE LOVE SOAPS and DAYTIME CONFIDENTIAL podcasts this week, the hosts were saying how the writing on DAYS has improved. Not perfect, but better than when the vets were there...implying that cutting the vets was a wise decision. There was even some talk that AMC was going to follow the example of DAYS and gut their cast in order to "reinvent" themselves once they make the move to L.A.

  3. Reinvent, translates into committing suicide. DAYS might not be in the position it is had JER not reinvented DAYS in the 90s, and again in 2003.
