The Lighthouse
This episode of Lost was a huge let down after last week.
This eppy was about sideways Jack with a bit of Claire. Sideways Jack has a ten year old son with an unknown mother. Their relationship is strained. Jack helps his mom find Jack's father's will. The will mentions Claire. Jack's son, David, tries out for a conservatory behind Jack's back. David and his mother hid David's piano playing behind Jack's back because Jack got obsessed with it in the past. While Christian was obsessed with Jack being a brilliant surgeon, looks like Jack put that same pressure on his son's piano playing. Jack earlier complained to his mother that his son doesn't talk to him. His mother said that Jack didn't talk to his father at that age either. Jack said it was because he was afraid of his father. His mother suggests that David may be afraid of Jack. Not much to mention in the sideways Jack. Jack runs into Dogen at the conservatory. He has a son trying out too. Jack and David grow closer afte the audition.
Hurley and Miles were playing tic tac toe to numerous ties in the beginning of the eppy. I don't think that was a throwaway mention. I still think this whole big secret is a game between nuLocke and Jacob. And it always ends in a tie. Everyone is staring at Sayid. Sayid asks Jack why. Jack tells him that The Others think Sayid is infected and that Dogen wanted Sayid dead. They cut the scene before Jack tells Sayid that he may be infected like Claire. At the Temple, Jack confesses that Sawyer, Kate, and Jin will not be returning to Dogen. Dogen confesses that he can't make Jack stay. Jack doesn't believe him. Hurley sees Jacob near the water. I believe the water is now clear. Jacob tells Hurley to write down instructions. Hurley tries to follow the directions without Jack and gets caught by Dogen near a secret passageway. Jacob tells Hurley to go get Jack. Dogen does not appear to hear or see Jacob. Jacob tells Hurley to tell Dogen that he's a candidate and can do what he wants. Very cute scene. Dogen leaves Hurley alone. Hurley talks to Jack and gets him to come.
Jack and Hurley find Kate. Hurley tells Jack that Kate can't come with them, she's not invited. Jack wants her to come. Kate decides to find Claire instead. Along the way to their destination, Hurley and Jack find Shannon's missing inhaler from season one. They come across the caves from season one with the two skeletons in it. Hurley says that maybe they time traveled and that the skeletons were their own bodies. I think it might be Jacob and the Man in Black, but that's just a guess. Some people think it's Bernard and Rose. Jack sees his father's busted up coffin. Jack confesses to Hurley that he found the caves chasing after his father's ghost. He also confesses that he busted up the coffin because it was empty.
Finally, they arrive at the lighthouse. Hurley's writing on his arm is smudged, but he makes out the number 108 for him to move the mirrors to. Jack notices the names and numbers of the other candidates on the dial. He moves the mirror to his name and sees his house. Jack knows that Jacob has been watching them via the lighthouse. He destroys the mirrors. Jacob wanted them to use the lighthouse to help someone get there. Hurley talks to Jacob after the smashing of the mirrors. Jack is on a cliff looking out at the ocean. Hurley apologizes for the mirrors being busted. Jacob said that the person will just have to find another way to get there. I'm thinking the person might be Desmond, but that's a guess. I'm assuming Dez is a candidate too. Jacob seems happy that Jack might be figuring things out for himself while Hurley does whatever Jacob tells him to do without question.
Claire frees Jin from the trap. Jin passes out from the wound. She takes him and then injured Justin The Other to her camp. When Claire leaves to sharpen her axe, Justin tells Jin that Claire has been killing them off. He wants Jin to untie him. Claire stitches up Jin's leg and says it's easier to not have to sew yourself up like she did. She asks Justin where Aaron is. Justin says they don't have Aaron, never did. Jin tells her Kate has Aaron, and has had him for 3 years. Justin asks to be let go. Claire puts in axe in his stomach killing him. Claire is not happy with Aaron being raised by Kate. Jin said he was lying to try to spare Justin's life. Claire threatens to kill Kate if she really did have Aaron. She said that Dogen and the Others stuck needles in her and branded her arm. Claire mentions her "friend." NuLocke shows up. Jin calls him "John" with a stunned look on his face. Claire said, "he's not John, he's my friend." Right before this scene, Jacob tells Hurley that someone is coming to the Temple to basically wipe them all out, and it's too late for Hurley to save anyone. So basically, Jacob lured Jack and Hurley from the Temple to save them. I didn't see Sawyer with nuLocke. The only Losties left at the Temple are Miles and Sayid.
So I'm assuming next week is the showdown at the Temple. I'm not sure what to make of this episode. I guess sideways Jack breaks the family tradition of bad fatherhood. I'm curious on who David's mother is. It could be his ex-wife's son. I'm disappointed that Claire does seem to be infected.
Ok, what did I miss? Tell me.

Looks like that not only are the differences in the Sideways lives but there is also contradictorally there are connections to the Island as well. Jack saw a surgical scare for an appendectomy and he did not remember having one, and his mother told him he had it when he was about seven -- but he did not and had it on the Island.
ReplyDeleteThe Comcast spoiler screwed up and said Sawyer meets an old friend, and it was Jin.
Claire definitely is EEEEVVVVAALLLLL and not just Danielle loopy. I figured as much since the Claire we saw in Jacob's cabin looked pretty nasty. So I am going back to the theory on TWoP that Claire died during the take over by Widmore's forces and that Smokey some how got involved with her.
I am thinking that whatever is going on leads back to Egypt. The Greeks were there after the death of Alexander when his kingdom was divided up by his offices, with Ptolemy getting Egypt, and his descendent was Cleopatra. The Lighthouse reminded me of the famous Light House of Alexandria -- named after Alexander, and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Obvious the Evil forces want Aaron. It is not a mother's love, or even a mother who went around the bend. Which leads one to wonder, were the Others evil by taking over kids, especially Alex, or was their doing so actually for the good because they feared that the kids from the plane and Alex would be used for evil. Maybe that is why they wanted WAALLLLLLLLTTTTTTT, especially since he also seemed to be able to cause things to happen by just thinking about them.
So, is the Cave Jacob's or is it MIB/nuJohn/Smokey's? Because the Lighthouse, which seems to be Jacob's had names on it. The Cave dark, devoid of light, Light is the Good in Platonic symbolism -- in Plato's Allegory of the Cave, the Cave dwellers see the reflections of fabrications of objects, and thus the distortion of the truth. So, I am thinking the Cave is really MIB/Smokey's. And all he said about Jacob are lies. Jacob did not force or manipulate the Chosen he gave them options and they had Free Will. He just lied to James to get him to turn on Jacob. The Devil is a charismatic deceiver.
I'm not sure if Claire is evil yet. Maybe her friend promised her Aaron back so she does what he tells her to do. I know that Claire knows he's not Locke, but no one told her Locke was dead.
ReplyDeleteI do think that The Others take the kids to protect them. I do think that Walt creeped them out and wanted him off the island completely.
I do think the cave was Smokey's. And the lighthouse was Jacob's.
I know free will is a mantra with Jacob, but he did manipulate Jack and Hurley to go to lighthouse without revealing why he wanted them there. He didn't tell them that Smokey was going to the Temple because he knew they would stay to protect Sayid and Miles. Jacob manipulates because he never reveals the whole truth when he wants someone to make a choice in his favor.
108 was the minutes to push the button. Some people saw that the number 108 corresponds to the name "Wallace" that was crossed off. Someone saw Linus on the lighthouse that was crossed off. Austen was on the dial too. 108 is the total of Hurley's numbers combined.
DIVA! That was an EXCELLENT episode - maybe the best of the season! GIRL - rewatch!
ReplyDeleteBefore Jack freaked out upon seeing his home, I could have sworn I saw images of what looked like some panorama of a city, it was so quick, but it may have been a house -- but it did not look like the Shepard place.
ReplyDeleteI think Jacob manipulates but then so do all religious deities or their followers. They just do not force the person.
I was always sure that Jack would be the one who would take over since he was always the most follower of reason and always fought faith -- even in the first or second episode he argued against having some service for those who died in the plane crash.
As for Walt last year I saw these clips on ABC.com which was from the previous year -- I believe they came out in 2008 and were meant to be add-ons to set in motion the 2009 season. I do not think the clips were material edited out from the original episodes, but that they were just created in 2008 as supplements. One of the clips was supposed to be for the very first episode. It had Vincent's perspective running through the jungle, as if looking for something/one. Then he stops and we see Christian. He tells Vincent to find his son. Vincent runs off and finds the unconscious Jack. Then there was a clip of Juliet and Ben talking -- I believe -- and they are going on how Walt did something in the experiments and they were freaked-out and they did not want anything to do with him. I sure hope we find out more about that. WAAAAAAAAALLLLLLTTTTTT was always weird. He was reading that ornithology book and the very bird he was talking about crashed into their window. I always found it really freaky and maybe sinister that his mother happened to die just a couple of days or weeks after that scene. And I remember his step-father was freaked out about him and that was why he called Michael. Then all the times playing backgammon he would get just the right roles. And the times Walt appeared to people. Didn't he appear to Shannon which caused her to chase after him which lead her to where the Tailies were and that got her killed by Ana Alicia who thought she was an Other. Though I do not how they will manage unless we have another leap forward to the present year because the actor would now be over six years older and not just three years older; there is a big difference in three years for kids.
Another STAR WARS reference, Hurley telling Jack that Jacob was dead but popping up all the time Obi Wan.
Any idea why Sideways Jack has a kid? And a musician? His name was David and he is a Shepard. Connection to the Biblical King David, who also was a musician. His grandfather is Christian, the name has to be significant. Jack, is a diminutive of "John," possibly John the Baptist? Would mean that Jack is not the Chosen but that he ushers in the Chosen?
There is also a great deal of connection to how they choose the next Dalai Lama, at least when they were testing YoungLocke -- when the Dalai Lama dies they search out boys who were born immediately afterwards, and test them by giving him toys along with stuff the former Lama had, the one that choses the items the former Dahai Lama had is thought to be the reincarnation of the DL and thus is the new DL -- that way all the DLs are in actuality the the original DL.
Also,
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a major connection to Catholicism too, many of the characters are Catholic and things take place in Catholic Churches, monasteries and event he hospital Jack worked for, the sanitarium Hugo was in, and last night the prep school Jack's Sideways kid's school all had saint names. Despite TPTB saying the Island is not Purgatory, it sure seems to have some elements of Dante's version of Purgatrio. It is in the Southern Hemisphere in the South Pacific, it is a mysterious island, people do go through some form of cleansing of their sins. Though others fail, but then even in Dante Ulysses/Odysseus saw the Purgatorio and did not make it to the Island because he was not worthy. For Dante when Lucifer was cast out of Heaven, the casting out caused Lucifer to be like a drill, and he drilled into the earth, in a cone shape, and everything from the center of the world was pushed up in a converse cone, and at the top of that was the Island of Purgatorio with the Garden of Eden at the of island. So I think like Dante's Purgatorio. And we saw "Adam and Eve" yet again, they were not forgotten.
