Diva Picks - 12/7 to 12/11

WINNERS OF THE WEEK: Victor and Vivian. With their teaming up to give Carly payback, I think they are giving Stefano and Kate a run for their money as a new Salem power couple! And the zingers fly every time they are together.
LOSER OF THE WEEK: Faye Walker. Once a pushover, always a pushover. I can’t say I’ve missed her much.
SCENE OF THE WEEK: The scenes with Sydney in the rocking chair accompanied by THE VOICE and THE HAND of the kidnapper. I’m saving up my enthusiasm for next week’s picks’ but this scene definitely sets up the stage for next week which promises to be amazing.
PERFORMER OF THE WEEK: Crystal Chappell. Okay, some of our readers accuse me of being a CC hater; that’s not true. But I do want what I see on screen to match up with the hype. I thought she was excellent in her scenes with Mia/Melanie, going down memory lane with Bo, evading a confrontation with Hope only to get into a confrontation with Justin later. I think there is some Kurth/Chappell chemistry there, much more palpable than Kurth/Alfonso right now. Chappell’s scenes are understated this week, but I can tell that she is more comfortable now and getting into a groove.
ZINGER OF THE WEEK: Vivian: “I know that you’re going to fight this but I also know that one day you’re going to accept me as your mother.” Philip: “Well, if that’s true, then I guess everyone is right. I really am a son of a bitch.”
RANDOM THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Is it L.A. or Salem? On Friday’s eppy, Philip and Melanie are dressed more for the beach than Xmas time.
Diva "I do want what I see on screen to match up with the hype"??
ReplyDeleteDiva, Crystal has been on soaps for the past 19 yrs.
Vivian is delish...i like her with Victor but i loved her with Stefano...i am looking forward their first meeting..
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't care if she'd been on soaps for the last 40 years, when there are critics (so called) and websites promoting her as the best actress on the planet, I expect something more out of CC than merely keeping me from using the FF button. I think the writing sucks but I've seen other actors/actresses do it despite bad writing and what has kept me watching this mess so far isn't CC, its Vivian and whatever she has planned.
ReplyDeleteI think it took CC a little while to get settled at Days. She started on Days after only a few days away from GL. The production model at GL was much different than the typical way soaps do things. And let's face it, she hasn't played Carly in 16 years. Plus, until this week her storyline was kind of at a stand still.
ReplyDeleteCC is more than capable of making bad writing watchable. Half of Olivia's storylines on GL were sucktastic. CC seemed much more comfortable as Carly this week and that will only continue. And CC is not a scene chewing type actor. If a viewer prefers the over-emoting stuff, then that person is never going to appreciate CC's more subtle approach.
As to Vivian? Yeah I love me some Viv - but really aside from actually killed Carly, I'm not sure what she has planned could be more dastardly than burying her alive!
lol so those who don't find CC their cup of tea prefer scenery chewers. I've watched this show for years before CC was on the first time, so I know the difference between good acting and crappy acting, thanks. Everyone has their likes and dislikes and I'm tired of the constant need to call someone else's judgment into question just because they don't share yours.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I saw CC on GL over the years, and I liked her as Olivia, and yes the writing was sucky but there is a difference between the writing on GL and on DOOL, an attitude at Days that it is not the writers job to provide reasonable character motivations. Sometimes if the writers give a damn about the characters, they do provide it, as for Nicole during this last year, but that has been the rare exception and if they don't care about the characters or don't want to focus on them or literally don't understand a character, that actor is stuck having to provide it on their own, not to mention all the times the writers are just too damn lazy to to make the plot believable consistently for all the characters involved and write 90% of them as idiots just to make the stupid thing work.
And that has been the case for the majority of storylines on DOOL for decades now, not just this last year.
CC herself has admitted that it took her some time to get into a groove.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to Stefano/Kate vs. Victor/Vivian, I find myself unable to pick a side. They're equally awesome.
Giddy with excitment about Sydney and Anna . . .

Actually, I wasn't directing that comment at anyone in particular. Nor saying if someone doesn't like CC then they must like scene-chewers. Just saying in general, soaps do tend towards big emotion type acting and that's not necessarily her style.
I was giddy just seeing Sydney again! Honestly, I've never been this crazy about a baby on a soap since Bianca's daughter Miranda was a baby on AMC.
I love CC but I'll be the first to admit that she's just now being believable as Carly to me. But she herself admitted that it must be hard to go from a type of character like Olivia, then to Carly but I do kinda feel bad for her all these websites saying she's the best thing since sliced bread isnt helping her. In daytimeconfidentials latest podcast they mention how Carly is being written a little out of character how when she sees Vivian she should be more scared and such I think maybe the writers don't know much about her character from the 90's.
ReplyDeleteI don't care how long CC's been in the soaps. What matters is what we're seeing on screen now. Excuses about production models, how long it was since she played Carly, etc. doesn't matter at the end of the day; and you can bet it doesn't matter to Corday or Tomlin. At first, just seemed a little out of it to me, but now she's getting her groove back. I agree all the hype didn't do her favors on DAYS, although she mostly did it for VENICE. But she got Performer of the Week; so I don't see what the fuss is about.
ReplyDeletefancyface...let me guess who you like on Days, lol
ReplyDeleteFancy Face writes the Diva picks every week. She's the one who gave Performer of the Week to CC.
ReplyDeleteCarly is being written a little out of character how when she sees Vivian she should be more scared and such I think maybe the writers don't know much about her character from the 90's.

Maybe being married to Lawrence all those years took the scared out of her - she's tougher after all of that!
I do agree the writers don't seem to know much about the character though. Caroline calling Carly "that woman" was laughable. For all intents and purposes, Carly was a member of the Brady and Horton clans.
The hype was way overboard, I agree.
Carly 1.0 was too goody-goody for my liking. The tougher (and snarkier) the writers make Carly 2.0, the happier I'll be.
