Network suits are morons. They put the soaps in the position they have been in by thinking that making the shows for tweens and teens they will get those viewers and anyone over 35 be darned. They were too dense to realize that there had always been large numbers of teens who loved the soaps even with [GASP] older actors who were first actors, not models. Back then young people watched with their older adult relatives or babysitters. When they alienated anyone over 35 not only did they lose that demographic but they actually cut the number of new and young fans to watch. They changed the whole structure of soaps.
It is sad that the soaps are dying. And fans will get sick of reality and talk shows. Fans will want to be entertained with good story telling and good acting. And sadly stupid and greedy suits will be to blame when they will not find that type of entertainment on their screens.
But it looks like soap actors and soap people are moving on to the Net, and more and more people get their entertainment on the Net.
Looking at Days average viewer age of 56, it seems TPTB are taking notice to that and using their vets a little more. I have been noticing this year that summers are usually focused on teens, however, this year they are not front and center. Which I'm really glad they aren't, I prefer to watch the vets myself! I happen to be enjoying the vet stories more than any other, one of my favorites right now is Victor and Maggie. They are both great actors doing a great job with the story they have been given.
The only thing I wish Days would do is use my faovirte actor a lot more on the show....Wally Kurth!!! He is a great actor that act!

ReplyDeleteIn the 70s and 80s the younger actors learned from experienced actors; actors who were trained for movies and theater. Writers and producers also were trained in such genrés. Soaps were mini-plays. That got people watching. Also, different soaps catered to different types of viewers. When a soap - COUGH DAYS COUGH -- changed its formulae they lost fans and they did not gain fans to compensate. Sure DAYS got fans during the weirder period, but they alienated may long time fans. And the fans they got were more there for what I refer to as the MST3K effect -- after the show MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000 -- wherein bad movies and TV shows were mercilessly made fun off with intelligent snarky humor.
