I wonder if DAYS decision in doing the memorial was a mistake since viewers seems to revolt whenever Alice is written off the show even though it is summertime.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the ratings goes, Did people really thought DAYS was going to get the nearly half-a-million viewers back during that awful build-up to the memorial and the current BS stories right now? LOL! I beg to differ, and, now days really want to character assassinate Bo and Hope.
Days really want to hit rock bottom.
Sadly Corday will take the numbers as proof that people do not want the vets. I think it was more of a case that many have been gone so long that even for the returns they did not want to bother, they had no faith in the writing, despite what people think still a large number of people (especially older viewers) are not on the Net to get the news or read soap mags. The fans that came back were disappointed in the way their favs were used, and the obsession with the current crop of characters. Also, the many fan sites on the Net and YouTube does not help because they have access to the good stuff if they want to remember the great Alice scenes.
ReplyDeleteI guess it is still on that NBC is moving to the new studio complex. I cannot see NBC wasting studio space on DAYS, they will use the new sound stages for their shows or rent the space to shows which have the money to pay big bucks -- which I cannot see Corday, Inc., and Sony, Inc. capable of doing with the show's budget problems. So, I cannot see anyone stepping in to force Corday to fix the problems. I sadly think that once this contract is up -- which probably coincides with the remaining time NBC will be at the W. Alameda location -- the show will end. And then we will have the vets returning for a few sound bytes each -- like the Alice memorial.
Addendum, I think DAYS will be gone in a year or so, and so will one or two ABC soaps -- OLTL and maybe even AMC. I think the network suits are going to be in for some rude awakening. They are all lemmings jumping off the proverbial cliffs in their canceling of soaps. In the end I think it will be disastrous for the networks. Soaps have been apart of network TV since their beginnings -- dating back to the radio days. Sadly no one gets it that soaps are important. That to get young viewers you need to pander to adults not teens and tweens. That the fans want adult stories, which mean character driven plots, and continuity; and adult does not mean hot sex and characters bed hoping, but intelligent stories, more complex stories, and yes good old fashion romance -- look at LOST, the boards were filled with happy posters who loved the final scenes between the characters, their reunion scenes.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the Net is where soaps are heading, and they are not being produced by network suits or producers/writers with no training in soaps, but by veteran soap actors. Though they will need better marketing, and not just throughout the Net, to get the prodigal fans who want soaps but do not have access to the information about these new soaps' existence. Maybe if these on-line soaps are successful the networks or the other channels such as USA, TNT, Lifetime, etc. will pick them up.
I loved the Lost finale. Satisfying reunions. The show was the epitome of character based drama instead of storyline driven drama that we have now. The Lost fans knew the characters inside and out, and the writers respected that. Unlike DOOL, that rewrites a character to have never lost his leg! lol
ReplyDeleteOLTL is definitly going off the air. The end of Soap Net will coincide with the end of Days of our Lives why else renew for only one year??
ReplyDeleteIs there really a need for Soap Net now? Aren't most of the soaps streamed on-line? Soap Net screwed up when the suits stopped airing the soap related shows they did so well, Soap Talk, etc. That was the place to see soap actors interviewed on TV, and when the network stopped airing cancelled soaps and the primetime soaps -- and I do not mean the tween stuff but Dallas, et. al.
ReplyDeleteI always felt that DAYS looked better on SN than on NBC -- though that may have changed I have not watched since '06. But for me the resolution was better and the color was better, I guess because it was digital while NBC was not. NBC always butchered the credits, with the voice overs and promos for their primetime shows, with SN they played the credits full screen and with the DAYS theme.
