"Youthanizing" Day of Our Lives

The Diva just saw a funny commercial using a wonderful play on words with euthanizing/youthanzing. What a perfect slogan for DOOL! We can call Gary Tomlin "Dr. Kevorkian." Tomlin's youthanizing DOOL. Funny how only the vet actors are being euthanized.

Anyway, the Diva Spy Network did their research and came up with some fabulous quotes about the nicest guy ever, JER and his writing.

This from Bill Hayes

In Octorber of 2003 we were in China. The phone rings and it was Ken Corday. "We need Doug and Julie starting in December, but.... but what I say " Are you bringing us back to kill us?" Ken " Well yes" Ken couldn't assume we would agree to come back if we knew what our fate would be. "That is Doug. If you don't want any part of it, the part will be recast." One way of the other Doug was toast.

Can someone please tell me the point of killing off a recurring character?

Nurses love Reilly

Even Julia Roberts bashed Reilly

Frances Reid: Oh, and when asked about the possession storyline, Frances said, "I was ashamed! It was embarrassing." When asked why, she said something like, "I can't believe in the devil. Can you? It was embarrassing."

Galen Gering, "Then the thing that would always crack me up-and still does to this day-is they would come over the PA and be like, 'Okay, that's a little out of character; you can't play it that way.' You're thinking, 'Are you freaking kidding me right now? Have you guys read read the show?' "

Galen again, "Or other scenes where they were like, 'Okay, you have to play this for real [even though] I know your girlfriend [Fancy] has been raped like 8 times.' [As Luis, I said], 'Oh, I'm just going to go out and grab something to eat real fast.' She was like, 'No, don't leave me alone. I'm going to be attacked,' and I was like, 'Don't worry, you're fine!' Then of course, she gets attacked and then next day, we're having a romantic love scene. It's like 'What? How do I do this?"

  1. What? You mean St. Reilly, the patron saint of DAYS, was not the be-all end-all of its existence? I don't believe it!!!

  2. Now who could disagree with Frances Reid? She's right, of course. I've always loved her frankness.

  3. Hey Diva, have you heard the latest Daytime Confidential podcast? It sucks. If you haven't heard it, here are some things that Jamey said on a recent podcast about JER.

    * Jamey is a fan of JER and he disagree with what Thaao said about "the James Reilly's of the world killing daytime." .

    * He feels that JER is the daytime version of
    Aaron Spelling.

    * He thinks that JER first run on DAYS saved the soap from being canceled and give DAYS 10-15 more years on the air and save daytime as well.

    * He blames the writers after JER for the problems with DAYS and daytime right now.

    * And lastly, he feels that the anti-JER fans are looking too much into his writing and not the ratings; because, during JER's first run on DAYS, the show was #1 in the 18-34 demo...

Wow! I guess the JER love affair is everywhere and since when did it become a rule not to bash JER?

  4. JER is the worst thing that ever happened to Days. He turned a respected show into a joke and the show has never recovered.

  5. Hi, I am Mr. Millbauer. I was the disgraced funeral director that JER kept in business with all those flying coffins. That was the best story on Days of Our Lives. The fake island, the fake force field, the fake pub, the fake funerals. Every thing was fake. Good times!

  6. DAYS was not to be canceled in 93 the ratings were not great but not horrible. And the reason for the bad ratings in the first place was directly due to Tom Langan ( JERk's partner in his love of hot bodied boys over actors, his hate of women and his wanting to kill the supercouple). 1991 the show started to get rid of actors, other than a last minute reprieve from NBC Matt Ashford was almost fired due to Tom Langan wanting him off the show. We lost other actors during this time, and the older actors, who in 1990 were getting stories and taking part in adventures were back burned. If not for Langan the show would have been healthy. Then JERk came in and he and Langan had the same mind set. They got Corday to kill the supercouple and from the summer of 1992 we lost many actors, Charles Shaughnessy, Mary Beth Evans, Richard Biggs, Susan Hayes and then Matt Ashford (who they finally were able to fire). Had DAYS not listen to Langan DAYS might not have been in the position it was. But DAYS lost people due to JERk and Langan, and the ones that came many to make fun of the show and see how pathetic it could be, the next stupid plotting. During the time of the Satan silliness, other soaps were tackling serious issues, AIDS, breast cancer, the death of a child and organ transplantation, DAYS was a joke in the industry, it might have got new fans, but those did not care about the show history, the show's love of romance and family, they cared about what stupid event JERk would pin next.

And I am sick of the man is dead he cannot argue back. Well, he sure did not seem to care about firing the actors who could act and they not being able to do anything about it. Remember Suzanne Rogers who said she feared how she was going to pay the mortgage, and what would happen to her and her elderly mother if she could not. Yeah, the man had heart. So much heart that not only did he fire actors who did not fit his idea of hot bodies toy boys, but he got rid of their characters in grusome, cartoonish fashions and made all the characters' death big fat jokes. What a guy. Oh, and as for being a good Catholic, hmm, the Catholic Church was a complete joke during his tenure, just a prop for his stupid stories, and to me it seemed he was bashing it in his stories, just like he did women, anyone over 35 and actors who could act, and romance.

  7. * And lastly, he feels that the anti-JER fans are looking too much into his writing and not the ratings; because, during JER's first run on DAYS, the show was #1 in the 18-34 demo*

since the complaint that was made involved the writing, not simply how they effected the ratings, I would disagree with Jamey's assessment. This was Thaao's quote.;..

**They took the thing that people watched, which was great reality and passions, and made it into somewhat of a joke and cartoons**

THAT has to do with the quality of the writing, and Jamey can go on all he likes about JER's first run as headwriter in the 90s and what a success it was but the fact is, he did not write characters...he wrote plot and it lead directly to dumbing down DOOL so that both JER and those who came after him jerked characters around to fit the story instead of using the characters and their quirks and problems to drive the plot. JER's kind of writing led to a dead end until the only people who are going to watch will be adolescents with no concept of what a good story can be and we end up with plots like the Garden of Eden. Course, considering that most TV is nothing more than reality crap these days, I'm not surprised that there are plenty of those trying to stick up for writers like this.

  8. Did that idiot really compare JER to Aaron Spelling? What a fucking dumbass!

  9. this is a horrible blog, and i don't see it lasting long at all. it's not even that i disagree with what you're saying...it's your tone and how nasty you are. it's funny how you bashed melanie in the last entry, but you sound just like the character.

  10. Lasting long, I think this blog is gaining support from the people sick of the destruction of a once great soap by a hack who was filled with hate and hurt * real people *. Were JER the savior and a great soap writer he would have been and would still be lauded by his peers in the soap world. And I have never read any soap writer or producer who is part of a successful show praising JER. He is not going to be part of the pantheon of great soap writers, and other than a few follows and sycophants like Dena and Tomlin, will be considered a joke.

And it is one place where the specious argument that James E. Reilly is dead and thus is beyond reproach is * not * used not because Reilly is dead but because they cannot rebuttal the thought out arguments, backed by facts, of those who show that JER and his ilk did ruin DAYS and daytime -- however, even though daytime is in trouble only NBC worshipped at the altar of JER and his shock gimmick writing, which was offensive and which was filled with hate for actors, fans, the genré, women, and romance, and he did a hatchet job to familial relationships which was the corner stone of DAYS.

  11. so I went and listened to Daytime Confidential's podcast and Jamey's opinion of Thaao's interview. I will give the guy credit for not complaining about Thaao having the nerve to speak up. It's also difficult to argue with a guy who sees JER as Daytime's savior when he freely admits it is the kind of writing he's comfortable with and finds exciting.

And that's cool...for him but considering that daytime dramas entertained both his mother and grandermother's generation with intelligent, thoughtful writing that was far more riveting than anything Reilly wrote, I find it sad. Jamey, I sincerely hope you're not speaking for a generation of viewers because that would be embarrassing. Soap fans may not be expecting Shakespeare when they tune in, but that doesn't mean they don't have more of a grasp of the bard, or other great stories and literature than you obviously do.

  12. Considering the hits I get, The Diva is going to stick around. :-)

  13. All I know is that without good characters like Patch Days really sucks

The current cast is a joke.
Melanie and Daniel featured all the time makes one ill not entertained.

Tomlin's youth move and obsession with deleting anyone other than this particular unlikeable group has made Days too foul to ever support.

I dropped Days and Im guessing NBC will as well and it will be 2010

Gary Tomlin Dena Higley will be remembered as the butchered who killed Days!!!

    Not much of a resume.
Anything Gary Tomlin will lose all support

    I am so disgusted

NEVER AGAIN SHOULD ANYONE ASK WHY DAYTIME IS FAILING. IT IS NOT THE AUDIENCE. IT IS INCREDIBLY BAD PRODUCTIONS BY PEOPLE LIKE THE HIDEOUS GARY TOMLIN AND DENA THE HACK HIGLEY

I wish I had nice things to say. But this group inspires only disgust

By the way I also canceled Soap Opera Digest and Weekly for they seem to be afraid to NOT praise Corday. Shame on the dishonesty.
