See you in another life, brotha!
I guess he was right in season 2.
"Happily Ever After" was a much better episode than the Kwon centered "The Package." I'll start with the Kwon eppy since I neglected to blog about it last week.
The reason for me why "The Package" didn't do it for me was the lack of supernatural elements in it. The Kwons are the least interested characters in the truth in regards of the island. They pose no supernatural powers other than Jin's sperm that impregnated Sun on the island. Apparently he can knock her up on the sideways world too. The Sideways Sun is a bit of a mafia princess, and a not very smart one at that. The old Sun learned English to break away from her father and Jin. This Sun just started a new bank account. Keamy got shot again, which was nice. But I'm so tired of him. Please no more Keamy! Mikhail lost his eye again when Jin shot it out of his head. lol So, in the sideways world we have a pregnant, unmarried Sun that isn't that into Jin getting shot in the stomach area.
The island storyline was much more interesting. Widmore had Jin captured, apparently it was too early in his timeline. Widmore showed Jin pictures of his daughter and wife. Very touching moment there. One of the few highlights of that show. Sayid is sent by nuLocke to see what Widmore was up to. I did love the nuLocke/Widmore showdown even though it was brief. It was menacing to watch nuLocke pace around the barrier. He looked like a lion in a cage. He provided a distraction for Sayid to reach the dock where he saw the sexy Scot, Desmond. Not much of a surprise that Des was the package. But man, who wouldn't want that package for Christmas? lol
Ok, now to the fabulous episode. I adore Desmond Hume and Henry Ian Cusick. The Des episodes have always been amazing. Des runs into Hurley in the airport who tells him where the baggage claim is. I wonder if Hurley is the true candidate. He seems to pop into other characters' sideways world a lot to direct them where to be, like Jacob did. He did the same thing with Locke. Des talks to pregnant Claire. He offers her a ride, and tells her the baby is a boy. Des doesn't like surprises.
So Des in his sideways world is the Fix It Man for Charles Widmore. Widmore even gave him a drink of the 60 year old Scotch he denied him in another life. Also, there was neat stuff in Charles' office like the picture of a yacht, and a painting of a balance with a white rock and a black rock. Charles wants Des to get Charlie Pace to do a charity concert with his son, Daniel (Farraday) Widmore. Des meets up with Charlie who just got released on bail. Charlie walks right through incoming traffic. To me, Charlie has a death wish, or a near death wish. That's totally unlike island Charlie who fought to stay alive until he accepted his death in the looking glass station.
Des and Charlie are in the car when Charlie's song "You All Everybody" comes on. Des isn't inpressed. Charlie steers the car into the water. To me, it seems like the same area where Ben tried to kill Penny. Des escapes the sinking car while Charlie remains inside. Des dives back in to rescue Charlie. Charlie opens his eyes and puts his hand against the glass just like he did in the looking glass station. Des sees the message that was on his hand then, "Not Penny's boat." Des starts having flashbacks of Charlie's underwater death. Des frees Charlie. I thought it was odd that no one in the middle of the day tried to save these two. Whatever. Just thought it was odd that there weren't any spectators or attempted rescues by eyewitnesses.
Des wakes up in the hospital. Got a little bit of skin. lol Not enough really. Des is sent to get an MRI. Des sees his other life with Penny and baby Charlie. He realizes that Charlie was right when he mentioned earlier in the bar that he saw something in his near death experience on the plane about love. Des is not interested in love. Charlie said he saw a ravishing blonde on the plane. I'm assuming it's Claire, and it better well should be! I felt jipped as a Charlie/Claire fan that their relationship was almost completely platonic. Charlie explained that he felt paranoid around the federal marshal with Kate that he attempted to swallow the heroin when turbulence hit and caused him to choke.
Des gets out of the MRI machine to track down Charlie. He runs into Jack. They both recognize each other from the plane. Charlie is running away from hospital staff. I don't know if Dominic Monaghan does it on purpose or not, but he looks so funny running. He's always wide eyed. Des tracks him down. He checks Charlie's hand, but doesn't see the message. Charlie realizes that Des did see something in the car. Des asks who Penny is. Charlie told him to go find her himself.
Des tells Charles that he can't get Charlie to the concert. Charles tells Des to tell Mrs. Widmore himself. Mrs. Widmore of course is Eloise Hawking. Des's chauffeur, George, is the same guy who died from time travel on the island in the freighter. I didn't know who he was, I read that somewhere. lol George warns him that Mrs. Widmore isn't very pleasant. Des tells her that Charlie's not coming. She seems ok with that. Des hears Penny's name being read from a list. Her name is Penny Milton, obviously she got her last name from the writer John Milton. Des wants to see the guest list. Eloise has a cow, and refuses to let him see it. It's obvious to me that Eloise is fully aware of all the other worlds and doesn't want Desmond involved yet for some reason.
Daniel overhears the conversation and follows Des to his car. Daniel also gives a "love at first sight" story to Des about Charlotte. He said that night he came up with some genius physics theories with no knowledge of physics. This Daniel is a musician. Daniel tells Des where to find his half sister Penny. Des finds her jogging up the same stadium that Des and Jack met in season 2. Des introduces himself to her and passes out. She agrees to have coffee with him later. Des asks George to get the flight manifest. I believe that Des is going to find Claire for Charlie.
In the island world, Des is drugged up by the totally useless character of Zoe. Widmore wants to test on Des now. We see Simmons accidentally get fried by the electromagnetic room. Jin is watching this entire thing. Des attacks Widmore. They put Des in a chair that reminded me a lot like Jacob's chair in the cabin. They turn on the juice. Des tries to escape then collapses. When he wakes up in the box, is about the same time Des passes out when shaking hands with Penny. Zoe is surprised that he's fine. Des very willingly agrees to do whatever Widmore wants. I think that Des knows that if he doesn't do what he's told, that he won't end up with Penny. Zoe and two other dudes escort Des. Sayid kills the two men, and tells Zoe to run. I guess Sayid doesn't kill women. Anyway, Sayid tells Des that Widmore and his buds are evil and to leave with him. Des follows him.
Excellent episode. It kind of makes you wonder why the show has only used Des briefly in two previous eppies. He's such a brilliant character, use him more often!
Next week is the Michael and Libby episode. I'm afraid it'll be a downer from last week. I do like Libby, but I'm so over Michael.
