How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

Today the Diva would like to give a shout-out to a fellow Days blogger, Head Writer Dena Higley. Longtime fans of Days who are lamenting the the loss of their favorite actors, the inability to string a decent storyline together, a complete disregard for history and the woeful use of talent must truly be riveted by the daily goings-on in the Higley household. Yes Dena, we're thrilled that your son is handsome, sweet, clever and oh-so-popular. By the way, did you know that your show is going completely down the tubes ?
BUT HANG ON A MINUTE – the blog seems to have disappeared !
In the most gutless move in the history of the World Wide Web (I may need a citation on that one), Higley the Hack’s blog has mysteriously vanished in the wake of the firings of Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans. What’s the matter Dena, can’t take the heat ? You wimp.

http://www.daysofourlives.com/denasblog/

Speaking of the aforementioned actors: Once upon a time in Salem USA, there was a "fairly" popular couple. Legend has it that their wedding was the highest rating Days episode ever, and the second highest ever for any soap. When they returned after a long absence it was obvious that none of their chemistry had been lost, they still looked gorgeous and they could even act. Really well. Really, really well.

Since their return sent the Steve and Kayla fans into a frenzy in 2006, the lack of imagination displayed when writing for these guys has been mind-boggling - and I'm not just talking about Dena now. 16 years of missing time was pretty well glossed over, and hey, listen up guys - I think Lawrence Alamain was responsible for Steve's "death" and disappearance, not Stefano ! It’s a bit late to address that little slip-up I suppose but it does irk me.

Thankfully the Steve and Kayla Dorks (that's Skorks to you) were finally treated to a thrilling insight into Steve's lost years with the very in-character and well-written Ava storyline. Detect a slight note of sarcasm there ? Don't even get me started on that debacle. And were we really supposed to believe that a fabulous successful woman like Kayla didn't have even a hint of a relationship that whole time ? (Yes, I know about Shane but that's a whole 'nother blog). There was just so much story there to tell, even my poodle could have come up with something. What about right now ? Stephanie and Phillip are getting together - Victor used to be Steve and Kayla's freaking nemesis. Couldn’t you have done something with THAT ?

Anyway, back to the situation we currently find ourselves in. Here you have a couple of actors who clearly love working together, are supportive of their fans, have chemistry with just about every other actor on the show, look great together and here's the rub.....THEY ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THEIR CHARACTERS. The horror ! They care so much that when Kayla caught Steve in bed with Ava (**eye starts to twitch**) resulting in virtually NO REACTION OR DISCUSSION, Nichols and Evans along with their vocal fanbase had to practically beg TIIC for weeks on end for some resolution. Although they finally received their single solitary scene, the "fallout" they got was a bit more than anyone bargained for as they then proceeded to stay virtually offscreen for EIGHT MONTHS, and ending up where we are today.

And are they going to get a proper send-off ? This is one of soap’s all-time iconic couples don’t forget. If you thought John and Marlena’s exit was crap, then you ain’t seen nothing yet. Well actually I tell a lie – that’s just what you are going to see…NOTHING. As mentioned here yesterday it is believed they will just disappear off our screens with no explanation – they’re still around but they’re not. “Hey, Hope, where’s your best friend Kayla?”…”Oh, she’s just changing Baby Joe’s diaper in the bathroom”. You know, cool stuff like that. Maybe they’ll go out to mail a letter or something.

The lesson to be learned from this is that you tell Dena what to write (or politely suggest an idea) at your own peril. She’s going to do it her way and by gum she will write crap if she sees fit. No doubt there are other villains at work here - Dena is not running the show (officially). She does however seem to have an inordinate amount of power to match her apparent ability to hold a grudge. Or has she been instructed to purposely run this show into the ground ? What if Kenny has some kind of payout clause if the show gets cancelled ? Yes, unfortunately Dena’s writing is bad enough to consider these questions. I mean, surely nobody could unintentionally write this badly.

Anyway Dena, if you’re looking for something to do with all your free time (cos you don’t have to write the blog anymore), go check out SOD's Hot Off The Net poll which SN & MBE have just won in all categories for about the squillionth time in a row. Ask around about who has been getting a heap of incoming fan mail, faxes, emails and hotline calls, begging for a storyline. Watch the "Where The Hell Are Steve and Kayla?” video. Oh, and go watch some tapes of these two actors in their current run, making lemonade out of the lemons they've been getting for nearly 3 years.

Phew. Gotta go, I’m off to watch the tortured love story that is Daniel and Chloe. A lot of people are done with this show Dena.

  1. I wish your poodle had written S&K's story for the last three years. I have no doubt it would have been better than the bothced up bullshit that ended up on our screens. SN and MBE deserve better, as do their fans. But that's right, making fans happy is not high on the TIIC list, now is it? Done with 'Days'? Yes, done and be damned if I'll ever watch it again. Keep SN and MBE, and I tune in with their every scene. Loose them, and I am one of the many that will be lost with them.

Too bad I can't post that on Dena's blog, now isn't it?

  2. Diva, truer words have never been brought together in a more coherent CRY of FOUL! As I've said in other places and for months now, I do not understand the logic of all this. These people don't cost an arm and a leg, they have an inordinate amount of story left to tell, they are -- truly objectively -- among the very, very finest actors the show has in its arsenal, and the compelling stories available to them without even TRYING can easily trickle down and touch every single other character for their own significant stories. But no, instead, Hackley writes crap for characters no one likes, no one's invested in, and have nothing to do with the utter fabric of what this show is about.

When they go, I go. And that goes for their advertisers, too.

You, however, I'll read. YOU'RE entertaining.

    -- Wanda Romance. Yes, really.

  3. Diva, I couldn't have said it better myself. I don't think this show realized how many fans came back to watch this show to see S&K return in 2006. They've basically did nothing with them for three years, and you're right a poodle could have written a more compelling and entertaining storyline than these "professional writers" have written.

  4. Excellent observations Diva. Too bad you aren't head writer instead of Higley. Steve and Kayla's last airdate will be the last time I ever tune in to watch the sinking ship that is Days.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Diva, thank you for your comments. I just pray Dena actually reads your blog! Anyway, question....maybe Higley is fired too? That's why she just disapeared??? What do you think? Any inside info?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Wow Diva you do have a way with words, and I thank you! Steve and Kayla's last day will be the last for me as well. Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans are the classiest of actors and Days could have been so much more because of them if they had actually cared enough to use them.

  7. Best blog I have read in a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  8. This show and NBC are dead to me without S&K!!! If your intention was set the world's record in driving away as many fans as possible in a span of about two months, I think Corday, Higley, Tomlin and whoever else is making these bad management decisions accomplished that.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I wish Stephen and Mary Beth the best! They returned in good faith, prepared to work hard and give all they had. Too bad the writers didn't feel the same way. Their firing is the last straw for me, so I'll be out as soon as they are.

It isn't just about Stephen and Mary Beth leaving, though. It's also about the fact that I don't feel like the show cares about long-time fans anymore. I don't count with them now...and they don't count with me. Stephen and Mary Beth do count with me and they always will.

But Days of our Lives as currently written and without my favorites? Nah...

NBC, who doesn't seem to care what I think and feel, either?

    Nah.

So, it's good-bye to Days and it's also goodbye to NBC and any of it's cable stations as well.

I won't miss the network or the show. I do enjoy some of the actors who remain and I hope they're respected.

    But I can't stick around.

Make that, I won't stick around.

  10. I have watched Days off and on for 30 years! And now without S&K it goes off forever!!!! If Corday,Tomlin and Higley's intention was to go ahead and kill Days in a slow painful death with nobody going to the funeral, they've accomplished their feat.

  11. Diva all I can say is "You Go Girl" you hit every point on the head. But you can bet Hackely dont have the guts to venture here. I bet she is in hiding. Or maybe like that snivlineg twit Sami, she is in hiding. Her blog made me sick, I dont want to read 4 paragraphs about her family (lovely as they are) and 2 fluffy sentences how everyone is excited aboutr the changes at DOOL yeah right!

  12. Diva excellent post -- I don`t think I could have added anything. You said it all and I totally agree. Especially, "making lemonade out of the lemons they`ve been getting for the last 3 years". Thank you for your blog. You have made a longtime viewer and lifetime fan of Stephen & Mary Beth`s very happy with what you`ve written.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think I love you!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Diva, excellent blog! You have put into words what a lot of the fans are thinking. I am one of those that will not be watching the show, let alone anything else on NBC. I came back to this piece of crap show to see the best two actors in the business and the characters of Steve and Kayla and this is the thanks the actors and fans get, no thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I also will tune out. No Stephen & Mary Beth -- no me and that means NBC too. They don`t respect longtime viewers. I`m sure CBS & ABC have shows that will suit me.

Bye Days, Bye NBC -- you have made this last year a nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Very, very, very well said. I only came back to Days because of Steve and Kayla. Well the day they are officially gone from the screen is the day Days comes off my DVR.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I couldn't agree more. Diva, you said it all. And no, Dena can't take the heat and she sure as Hell can't write. I hate to see what she and all her other cronies have done to this show. Please sell it to ABC, so maybe we can have a soap we can enjoy watching!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. omg...this was brilliant...take THAT Dena!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Diva You Said It All You Totally Rock

    ReplyDelete
  20. You have just wrapped this whole debacle up in a very well described(and funny)nutshell.
Well done in expressing what dare I say ALL of us SKorks are feeling about this and the last 2 and 1/2 years.
Unfortunately, the truth of the matter as you write it means nothing to TPTB.
    Keep it coming Diva!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Great post Diva! It's truly obvious that TIIC have no respect for any of the characters/Actors/actresses or the fans of the show. It's truly a shame that after 43yrs on the air it all comes down to this garbage we're getting now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. WhAAAT? Y'all aren't loving the sweeping romance of Daniel and Chloe? Or should I say pornmance?

Sheesh, even Reilly was better than this, and it really pains me to say that because Reilly sucked the big one.

If Hackley, Tomlin and Corday never work again in this business after Days folds, they will have reaped what they've sowed. Their sheer idiocy is truly mind boggling.

I hope to see SN and MBE in something worthy of their talent soon. Thanks Diva. You nailed it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. That is an awesome post Diva!!! You hit the nail write on the head. Unless by some miracle they change their minds..I will be joining my fellow SKorks in turning off Days on their last airdate! I started watching again in 2006 to see the Patchman and now I'm losing him all over again???? When not much about his past has been told. You are correct it was Lawrence Alamain!! But yet again they rewrote history.

Dena is probably hiding from a rock somewhere!!! She can't handle the backlash! She should have thought about that before she chose to refuse to write for them! I don't know what her reasoning is but Stephen and Mary Beth did nothing to her! She has issues!!! I am also insulted that they chose to ignore the mail they get. I called 3 hotlines today I am NOT going away! Keep up the laughs Diva!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Great blog Diva! Thanks for mentioning the hard work and dedication of the SKorks. At least someone noticed the pleas for a better story for our couple. Too bad nobody at Days or NBC gave a hoot!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Diva, you and your poodle are welcome at my house anytime. We can get out the ole voodoo doll and decide which of the morons we want to stick pins in or just have a Margarita and take turns with them all. :)

Seriously, I came to Days in 2006 never having watched the show and fell in love with Steve and Kayla. The actors care maybe too much for their characters because they have always gone the extra mile for S&K and for their fans. I will never understand why they weren't given a good story when the Kiriakis story was staring the dimbots right in the face. I guess it takes a Higley to tear down a soap. I'm gone. When Stephen and Mary Beth go up those stairs for the playtime that never ends I will disappear with them and DOOL can just blow.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You nailed what we are all feeling squarely on the head. TIIC at Days are driving a this show straight into a funeral pyre. Mind you no one will be around to light the match but I don't think they care. I left Days many years ago because it wasn't MY show any longer. That feeling is so much worse now. The antagonism I feel now isn't something I see being able to move beyond. This is one bridge Corday and his cronies will have burned to complete ashes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So so sad. There is so much left to write for this amazing pair. Why oh why does no one see our pain. They are one of the most famous super couples ever. I dont understand why it has to end this way. I too will leave with them. So So sad.

    ReplyDelete
  28. OMG!!!! You have taken every thought of SKork nation and so funny but very articulately put it down. I bow at your prescence and thank you fully for all great comments. Dena is running scared and hiding because she knows that she has screwed up messing with one of the better and more vocal bases who can be so creative to get their point across.

I was around for the first run and fell in love with the charcters of Steve and Kayla and Stephen and Mary Beth. It is their off screen friendship, caring of their fans, caring of their characters to go the extra steps that have made me stick by them and I was excited when I heard of their return 3 years ago. Little did I know that I'd be "used" only to try to help bolster ratings. I expected to get a few good storylines in balance with the rest of the cast...that was all I asked.

All I can see is that Corday and crew don't care about the fans and they are destroying the rich history..unfortunate for them once Steve and Kayla make their final appearance...I'm gone and that will go pretty much for NBC as well and potentially their advertisers too. If they think most of us will take this lying down and stay...they are SORELY mistaken.

If the decisions are reversed then maybe they have a chance otherwise...I give this show until September because NBC will have something to throw in the spot.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thank you Diva. You have told it like it is. You Go Girl!
And I'm still going to write, fax and call because this is total BS

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow, you said it all!! Those are my feelings exactly.
They are definitely going to be sorely missed and I wont be watching Days any longer.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Diva-a brilliant essay-You have encaptulated every thought of mine.I have thought about the Corday payout clause for a long time. No-one could willingly destroy the show like he has without another reason....MBE and SN are the only reason I have stayed loyal-now they are gone, so am I.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I came back to Days because of Mary Beth and Stephen and now once again I leave Days with Mary Beth and Stephen. I love them, their work and dedication to Steve and Kayla. Diva you hit it right on!! Thank you Diva! Let's continue to fight for them!!!
May the force be with you SKORKS

    ReplyDelete
  33. Keep fighting the good fight skorks, and I really hope we get to see them together in some form in the future. I don't think I've mentioned that this show sucks yet today....it really sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Diva you are so correct about everything you said. BRAVO!! We're being clearly robbed and Dena knows it. That's probably why her blog has mysteriously disappeared. She can't seem to take the criticism that she deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh Diva, you have a way with words, you have expressed exactly how I am feeling at the moment. I will never watch Days again, SN & MBE are way too talented and classy for this trainwreck of a show.

    PS will you marry me?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thank you Diva. What a wonderful blog. You must be a true Steve and Kayla fan. You know so much about them and the dedicated Skorks. You rock.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Diva.

So elequoent, so articulate, so bloody accurate.
It is nothing short of a major crime what has happened to our couple and if this travesty was being investigated by some major crime unit it would appear on law and order (SVU) Soap Violation Unit.

I won't miss Days, mostly because I still posses brain cells but as for SN and MBE, they will stay in my heart forever.

Keep fighting the good fight Diva!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey Diva could we print out your blog and send it to Corday & Higley???

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks Diva for a great Blog. You actually made me laugh on a day I didn't think it was possible !!!
You have really captured the thoughts and emotions of all us S&K fans in your writing.

I have kept quiet on my thoughts about Higley, mainly because I didn't think it would help S&K or the show to express how seriously loopy I believe this woman to be. But now what the hell!!! She is one mixed up, grudge holding, totally un self aware witch that by some weird twist of logic thinks it is acceptable to write a blog about a TV show in which she gushes only about her private life in frankly embarrrassing ways, and not deem to mention the show because really everyone should know it is all about me and even when its not it is still all about me.

  41. Diva...so accurately said!!!

Steve and Kayla are now in that place called limbo...no current story, no exit story. When did the interests of the fans become so unimportant to a show that's trying to keep their heads above water? Stephen and Mary Beth are two of the finest actors Days has...they have an excellent work ethic, are true to the characters they portray, and are unceasingly kind to their fans. By most standards, these are the ideals that any employer of a daytime soap would give their right arm for...but not this soap. So this fan will be taking a hike. Steve and Kayla's last day in Salem will also be my last day in Salem. Mr. Corday, you've fired the wrong employees once again...it's Higley and Tomlin that need to go.

    ReplyDelete
  42. You pretty much nailed it! I totally agree with everything you said. I will no longer be watching after their last scene.

  43. hey girl my name is Donna. i know it has anonymous, that is cause i didn't know how to get my name on it lol i am one of those Skorks you spoke about and it was like you saw right to my heart. you were right on the mark with everything you said. i have been watching days for 30 some odd years and this has killed my soul. once S&K air their last date i'm done and i want to thank Dena for freeing up my time.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm glad you guys like the blog entry so much. Please feel free to print out the blog or email it with a link. Whichever you prefer.

S&K was the only reason I turned this soap back on in 2006. Tanna kept me watching in 2007. Now, all 4 will be gone shortly. There's no reason for me to watch after March.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Let's see, S&K had about 4 1/2 minutes of screen time every 2 weeks or so, right? What will The Hack and Crew write to fill that extra screen time? I guess that's just enough time for another Chloe and Dr. Dan-imal romp... Enough time for EJ to get someone else pregnant. Sami could have a really good hissie fit in 4 1/2 minutes.

Oooo, I know... the camera could just focus on Melanie for 4 1/2 minutes and let her pout and make faces at the camera. That way we won't have to endure any of the inane dialog we've had to endure for so long.

I don't think it will matter, though. They could fade to black for the entire hour the show is on... no one will notice, because no one will be watching.

Thanks Mary Beth and Stephen for what you tried to do. Your efforts were valiant. You made the stuff they gave you look better than it deserved to look and I'll always be a fan.

Rhonda... who is off to watch a DVD of this great show that was on in the 80's called Days of Our Lives.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Diva you said what all of us are screaming about.I really don't understand why TPTB has chosen to plunge Days into the toilet, but this is an outrage!! The only reason I watch Days was for Stephen and Marybeth. Now there's no reason to watch. I'm so done.
Long live youtube! At least there I can still see S&K.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thank you Diva, for helping to put out there the injustice that has been dealt to one of the most beloved couples in Daytime. DAYS is a train-wreak in slow motion. So far it's been just accumulating casualties rather than looking for a way to avoid smashing into that wall.

The disrespect shown to the Vets is truly atrocious. Yet the TIIC don't stop there and disregard any pleas or outpouring of cries from longtime fans. They have blinded themselves to the letters, emails sent on a daily basis and deafened their ears to the endless calls asking for decent and well told stories.

No longer is the motto, we aim to please and entertain. Now it's, "You've stayed your hour, so... get out."

So many of we fans have let DAYS be a part of our lives. Though even if it was for an hour's time each day, it was something we gave freely and enjoyed and unfortunately, something that Corday and Dena eventually destroyed.

I, like so many of my S&K fans, will end my viewing when Steve and Kayla cease to grace our screens. To think we won't even get a proper send off is truly the cruelest of all insults. One thought keeps me smiling, that when DAYS eventually crashes and burns, Corday and Dena will be middle of it and maybe, we will finally be rid of them for good.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Stephen and Mary Beth will be missed. It looks personal from the writers. At least John saved Marlena. Steve barely had a chance to react to the shoting. How can this writer call herself professional. I leave the day they do. I leave the days of our babies to the teens. Bad luck to all.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dena is one clueless broad. It's pretty bad when the fans come up with better storylines than the writer of the show. I have seen fan fiction that is a whole lot better than the shit Dena writes. Corday is just as bad for letting her continue to write this crap and not firing her. She is the one that needs to be fired instead of Stephen, Mary Beth, and Thaao. I hope that bitch rots in hell.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You certainly hit the nail on the head. They are gonna lose so many viewers if they go through with this.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm done with Days. Firing Stephen and Mary Beth is the last straw. I have watched this garbarge that has been shown since this past summer in hopes of a story for Steve and Kayla. And I mean it, the stories have been awful. I have written and written supporting Stephen and Mary Beth, and this is what I get? They are fired?? Days needs to fire Higley and Tomlin and bring back the vets otherwise there will be no REAL fans left.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Couldn't have said it better myself. My last day for DAYS is their last day. I'm back to watching the writing that was good - 21 years prior. Something SOMEONE should've taken a hint on by now. I'm totally disgusted.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Now if only there was actually who would give two s**ts about what Dena is doing to this soap, then we may not be going through this. I am done with Days and SOOOOO done with Dena. What cowards having her blog removed. I am so sorry that they put the two best people in daytime out of a job, but I am so thankful to have seen them again, and made some amazing friends who shared in the love I have for this couple. They will live forever in my heart. Screw you Dena!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thank you for articulating so many of my thoughts. So sad about how previous/present vets have not been showcased. I am absolutely so sad about Steve & Kayla.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Diva,
Excellent!!!!!! This is the biggest daytime failure in history. The only thing I disagreee with is tha Dena is not a writer, but Theatre Major. . Tell your pooodle that Dena has insulted many people with facial disforamtions, people that had insecuritities about being adopted, people with hearing impairments and yes, a teacher of children with Autism who was inspired by Steve to go into Specail Education! I bet Days could save a ot of money by hiring a young creative writer who STeve and Kayla inspired as a teen. There is a budget cut for you Days. MY Days of Days are Done!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dena Higley is an evil vindictive talentless witch, she should be the person who is fired. FU Higley.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Dan-i-mal, ok, The Diva is stealing that.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I can't believe Mary Beth and Stephen were fired. Their fans have spent months writing to the heads of this show asking for a story or for them to be included in the stories. Why has this happened? We the fans are the ones that support this awful show and pay the salaries of the heads of this show. Well, now with Stephen and Mary Beth gone, I will no longer watch "Days" and I will no longer support it's sponsers or NBC for that matter. I have been loyal to "Days", but obviously Days and NBC have NOT been loyal to me as a fan of the show.
Bye people at NBC. As long as Steve and Kayla are not on board "days" neither am I.
